This article instructs readers to register and connect devices to the IoT network based on whether they are residents, commuters, faculty, or staff. You must be on campus or connected to the campus VPN. Please don't register university-owned equipment, laptops, desktops, or mobile devices.
Student residents
Resident students can enable the AirGroup feature. An AirGroup allows you and those with whom you share the device access to it from a laptop or mobile device.
- Visit the UMD connection page.
- Click the Gaming or Streaming Device box to visit the device creation page. You must be on campus or connected to the campus VPN.
- Enter the MAC address in the related field. For guidance, visit this article about finding MAC addresses on popular devices.
- Name the device in the Device Name field.
- Leave the AirGroup checkbox unchecked If you don’t intend to allow access to the device from your laptop, phone, or iPad. Click the Create button.
- A unique 12-digit umd-iot password for your device will be generated. You can disregard this for wired devices
- Connect your device to umd-iot using the password provided on the registration page.
- NOTE: No further action is required.
- Optionally, to allow access to the device from your laptop, phone, or iPad, continue to the next steps.
- Click the Allow access to the device from your laptop, phone, or iPad checkbox in the AirGroup field. A new field will be revealed.

- There are two options.
- Click the Create button without sharing access to this device with others.
- Enter the directory ID of resident UMD students in the Shared With field. Click the Create button after entering those you wish to grant access to the device.
- A unique 12-digit umd-iot password for your device will be generated. You can disregard this for wired devices
- Connect your device to umd-iot using the password provided on the registration page.

Non-resident students and faculty
Non-resident students and faculty share the same registration options.
- Visit the UMD connection page.
- Click the Gaming or Streaming Device box to visit the device creation page. You must be on campus or connected to the campus VPN.

- Name the device in the Device Name field.
- Click the Create button.

- A unique 12-digit umd-iot password for your device will be generated. You can disregard this for wired devices
- Connect your device to umd-iot using the password provided on the registration page.

Manage devices on the IoT network
- Visit the UMD connection page.
- Click the Gaming or Streaming Device box to visit the device creation page. You must be on campus or connected to the campus VPN.
- Click one of the Manage Devices buttons on the loaded page.

- From the list, select the device you want to manage.
- You can choose to Remove, Edit, Print, or Show Details.
- To make updates, click Edit.
- Make any changes and click the Update Device button.
